The highlight of the Grand Cayman day was Stingray City. We opted to purchase from a local rather than buying the cruises shore excursion package. Over all it was a good choice.
We joined another family of four and a young couple for a total of twelve. We got a great deal since the cost from the cruise line was $50.00 per person and we paid $25.00 per person. SWEET!!
The trade off was that they were on a huge catamaran (with hundreds of people) and we were on a very small boat with 14 people including the guides and only 12 life jackets I’m talking a very, very, small boat. But it was a great adventure.
When we arrived at Stingray City the guide/van driver/boat driver got out a huge knife and a bucket of squid and began slicing away. This is what we would be feeding the stingrays. The water was very shallow and we all began jumping into the water.
The good trade off for our personal package is that we were in an area with only 13 people in the water with a bucket of squid and the ships group was huge. We got lots of personal attention and were each able to feed and hold the stingrays as much as we wanted…which really was not that much for me LOL.
On the return trip our small boat was able to navigate through iguana alley where we could see ton of iguanas sunning on the shores. It was really cool to see. They actually looked like the were posing for the pictures. A route I’m sure the catamaran could not have taken.
It was a fun day with even more time to shop for souvenirs. Jake got a shark tooth necklace and Sam got a wallet. SUCCESS!!!
A trip to the planetarium. What a flash from the past.
Over the Labor Day weekend we had ample time to gaze at the stars by the lake around the campfire. It’s is so amazing to see God’s handy work. So I decided then and there the next Mamaw day would include a trip to the planetarium. And that we did.
This Mamaw day included an overnight so the late showing at 8:00 was not a problem. Okay 8:00 is not late for everyone but Jake is in first grade now and his day starts really early.
We invited Ezra and Noel..Morgan and Landon to join us and of course they did. We had pizza at the house before we left and enjoy sour patch kids while we waited for the show to start.
They not only showed us the sky over Louisville but a great description of our galaxy and the universe. It was amazing to see.
By the time we got home (much time was spent in the gift shop) Sam was pretty tired and conked out on the couch. Jake however stayed up till midnight.
Early the next morning Sam was the first one up…go figure. Sam and I enjoyed some quiet time on the front porch drinking coffee while we waited for Flay and Jake to get up. Flavius fixed sausage and eggs and we had a great time enjoying breakfast together.
Another great Mamaw day. Can’t wait for the next
Labor Day weekend could not have been any better. The weather was perfect..I mean perfect. We had great food and fun with our family. Very relaxing and just, well, perfect!!
We started off Friday with the regular Mamaw Day. Sam decided it was a good day to head to Salt River.
So we grabbed our bikes and off we went to the special entrance to Salt River. We spent some quality time there skipping rocks and pondering nature. We hiked quite a distance and decided to exit at the current location and go back later for our bikes.
After an adventure like that it was time for a hardy lunch. We jumped in the car and headed to Sam’s Wholesale Club. Okay I know that sounds kind of wierd but even on a regular day when Sam is given a choice between eating lunch at McDonald’s or Sam’s he will often choose Sam’s. Today however we were on a mission. We needed to get the crab legs and supplies for the Low Country Boil we were planning for Saturday. We had our traditional hot dog and pizza for lunch and then off we went to fill the cart. And that we did.
Saturday morning was spent preparing the feast. Folks started arriving around 11:30 and by noon the first pot of steaming crab legs, shrimp, corn, potatoes and kielbasa was on the table.
It became an all day affair. When a couple more people would show up we would put on a couple more pounds of crab legs. The kids played and we sat around reminiscing about the good old days. Later that evening it was even cool enough to start a fire in the chimnea and roast marshmallows. What a great day!
On Sunday we went to church then out to our favorite Mexican Restaurant and home for our regular Sunday nap. A weekly favorite
But the thing that made this Sunday different was that a group of us went to the movies. We saw Angelina Jolie in Salt.
It turns out that such good weather makes someone like Brandon want to camp out so Brandon and Amy and the boys came over and pitched a tent by the lake. We joined them for more roasted marshmallow and smores.
Monday morning we prepared bacon and eggs and Linda made homemade biscuits and we all joined them by the campfire for a breakfast buffet. Brandon had Krispy Kreme Donuts which he roasted on the campfire like you would a hot dog. Interesting new treat.
Later that day as the weekend drew to a close we had lasagna and salad with Danny and Linda before Brandon and Amy and the kids headed once again down to Salt River for a fishing adventure.
This weekend could not have been any better.
Well this week we had two fun mamaw days. Brandon took a couple of days off from work and made plans to take the family to Chuck E Cheese for the summer ending back to school treat. Sam (age 4) called me early that morning with the exciting news and invited me to come along. Shortly before they left, Jake asked if he could bring a friend from the neighborhood, and Brandon said no it’s just going to be us today and Sam said “and Mamaw…I called her”. So Flavius and I had the pleasure of joining them on this excursion thanks to Sam’s invitation:)
Of course Brandon likes to play games as much as the kids do so it was an experience just to see how many tickets they actually accumulated together.
When our regular Mamaw day rolled around we spent most of the morning with some plastic forms with pegs that you place tiny beads on, then you iron it and it melts the beads and you have this little artwork toy. VERY Tedious but still lots of fun. Who comes up with this stuff?
Lunch at McDonald’s, fun in the play room with newly made friends. And then back home for cartoons and more with the melt beads. It really seemed to be a hit and we spent most of the day around the kitchen table. Sometimes just sorting the bead into little clear plastic cups. Plenty of good conversation. It’s great how the conversation flows when you all work on something together without the interruption of TV. Brandon joined us and made the most highly admired plastic creation.
We ordered pizza and then it was off to Kart Kountry for more fun. Amy was attending the Beth Moore event in Lexington so there was five of us. Sam rode with Brandon. Jake rode with Flavius and I was on my own. You know how they choose sides in school for the kick ball game or something and the girl does not get picked because they think she is no good? Well I showed them. I won by a land slide. Zoom Zoom!! Real fun! It’s always a contest right:)
Only two tickets left and the unanimous choice was the bumper boats. I only wish I had my camera. These are the boats that have big water guns on the front. Brandon as an only child has no sibling rivalry but he and his dad go at it pretty hard. Needless to say they were all drenched when the ride was over. There was even some little girl that decided it was her mission to soak them as well. What a hoot.
As always a fun, memorable day.
Sam and Jake arrived Friday very excited about the fact that they saw a real snake by the road on the way to my house. So of course we headed out on foot to find said snake. Just as we arrived near the alleged area of the spotting, something resembling a snaked slithered into the lake.
Amy said it was coiled and ready to strike and that Jake was way too close for comfort, so we returned to the house for a You Tube lesson on how dangerous snake really are. We spent close to an hour with two laptops on the kitchen table watching You Tube videos of constrictors squeezing rabbits, sidewinders side winding, and cobras and assorted other snake striking and biting. Lesson learned.
A decision was made to spend the day at Kart Kountry. . The boys raided Flavius’ change jar for quarters and off we went for the days adventure. Much time was spent at the arcades and then miniature golf. It was actually 36 holes because we played each hole twice while we waited for the slow pokes in front of us to finish. I know no name calling. But hey they were really slow.
We grabbed McDonald’s happy meals and headed to the air-conditioned house to eat lunch and watch cartoons. We worked some puzzles and played battleship.
Late that evening Brandon and Amy joined us for dinner at Sake Blue and then back to Shepherdsville for blizzards from DQ as promised if Sam and Jake were good all day…which they were.
We walked down to Ethan’s house and the boys had some fun there before returning to our house to finish the day watching more cartoons with Jake and a few games of tic/tac/toe with Sam.
Big hugs brought the end to a great day of fun with Sam and Jake. We love you guys!!!
Well summer vacation is winding down. We have to get as much fun in as possible. Today we opted for Squire Boone Caverns and then Dinner at Joe Huber Family Farm.
We started our journey traveling over the hill headed straight to the Ohio river and then a left turn. After that it was all “Garmin” if you know what I mean. We stopped at the only food place between my driveway and the turn off for the caves which was Dairy Queen. A big hit for our first stop because the kids meal included free ice cream. As you may have noticed we are all about free!!
We arrived at Squire Boone Caverns in plenty of time to inventory the entire souvenir shop and to squash a few pennies. We listened to all the instructions about what to do and not to do while in the cave and then off we went. The tour was great. Short enough not to bore the little ones and informative enough to keep the adults interested. At one point Sam (the four year old) asked me when we would get on the ride and why we were still walking. We went to Disney last summer and it gets a little hard to tell realty from Disney.
After the tour we spent what seemed like hours deciding which souvenir to purchase and then we headed to the grist mill which was by a great creek that they decides to explore. Sam took a misstep and got a little wetter than the others. But all in all I think this creek time was one of the highlights of the day. Noel said on the way to the car ” I think we must be river people”. Not sure what that means but it was pretty funny. Okay you had to be there:)
Next we loaded in the wonderfully air-conditioned cars and headed to the Joe Huber Family Farm. Sam slept the whole way and Jake got car sick. He jumped out in the Joe Huber parking lot and threw up three times. Perfect timing I must say. I started to take picture but changed my mind…you’re welcome.
Brandon, Amy and Flavius joined us for a wonderful dinner. Fried Biscuits with apple butter, slaw, Fried Chicken, Sugar cured ham, Chicken and Dumplings, Green Bean, Mashed potatoes and gravy, and my favorite FRESH GROWN CORN ON THE COB!!!
Next it was off to feed the ducks and other lake animals. The ducks actually fought the catfish for the stuff we threw in the water. We enjoyed some time on the playground before heading to the barnyard. Even Brandon joined them in going down the big slide from the barn hayloft. They fed the goats, met some new friends that they had some great fun with and then we headed back home. Planning what we will do next week.
Be sure and click the links above. Joe Huber Family Farms offers an online coupon for free kids meals and Squire Boone Caverns also has online discounts.
Last week we went for the free movie special and then to the free bowling special and wow what a great time we had. While at the free movies they advertised “Despicable me in 3D” and of course Jake said “we want to see that”. I said “we will see that next time”…meaning the next time we are at the movies…not next week. But “next week” is what he heard so guess what? We are going to see “Despicable Me in 3D”. That is today’s Main Event.
I am sitting on my front porch waiting for them to arrive. Vicki, Ezra and Noel will be joining us, as we have planned a full summer of fun together with them. Our special guests today will be Brandon and Amy. Jake invited them to come along. The more the merrier:) It will be great fun.
I’ll post the full review.
Well the movie was good. Lot’s of funny moments and a sweet story line. The snacks were excellent. Pizza, hotdogs, reese’s, popcorn, coke. All very yummy!! We sat at the top as we always do.
Then it was home for a swim and pina coladas. Some fun on the swing set with the hose and then some cartoons and McDonald’s for supper. A good time was had by all.
Another successful Mama Day! God is good!!!
